Welcome to South Central Pennsylvania

This blog will consist of all (or at least try to cover most) the happenings within the Cumberland County area, as well as bits and pieces of the its history.

Cumberland County is located in the south central part of Pennsylvania. The county formed from Lancaster County in 1750 and covered much of western Pennsylvania and therefore is referred to as “Mother Cumberland”. It is the sixth oldest county in Pennsylvania

The county is named for Cumberland County, England. Carlisle, named for an English town, became the county seat in 1752, prior to that it was Shippensburg.

The early settlements within the county consisted of Scotch-Irish settling in 1715 and with settlements increasing in 1734, followed by German settlements in 1757.

The county is located within the Cumberland Valley and between two Appalachian Mountain Ranges.  The Susquehanna River, which is the main tributary to the Chesapeake Bay, separates the county from Dauphin County. The River’s watershed also lies within the county.

The Carlisle Indian School history is one of the county’s most researched historical topic.
